About us

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Trauma Research logo expresses trauma as the disruption in the flow of life forces – Wairua (spiritual), Waiora (health) and Waiata (rhythm of life).

Health is re-gained when these life forces are able to flow again freely without impediment, te wairere au noa.

Trauma impacts people and relationships.

Aim of the centre

The aim of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Trauma Research (CITR) is to support and conduct trauma research that contributes to the health and wellbeing of people living in Aotearoa New Zealand and contributes to the international understanding of trauma and health.

Trauma is a common part of human experience. The CITR interprets 'trauma' as physical, psychological or cultural experiences that are extremely negative, uncontrollable, out of the ordinary and can be sudden or cumulative. This reflects the range of meanings used within the different health disciplines represented in the AUT Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and involved with CITR.
